Olympics Postponement is good news for Tennis – Tennis Column #39

International Olympic Committee, together with Tokyo Olympics organizers, decided about the postponement of the Summer Olympic Games 2020. Is it bad news or promise of a better summer for sports fans?

I know that the first impression is clear. Another big sports event will not happen. 2020 should have been a year of big sports tournament (football EURO, Olympics), but instead, we have plenty of time watching matches from the archive. All regular competitions, tennis tournaments included, were paused. The situation is not good at all, and we all just hope for better times.

Hopefully, they will come not later than in May or June. At that point in the future, we will find out that the Olympics postponement decision gives us two free summer weeks.

In a normal situation, two weeks from 24 July would be full of Olympic Games. All other sports would be in the shadow of it. Now all schedule-makers got a gift.

ATP, WTA, and ITF can think about how to use those two weeks. Do we need to reschedule Wimbledon? Or in case Wimbledon will be played at its scheduled term, we can move some already canceled clay Masters tournament from Rome, Madrid, or Monte Carlo. Now we have a beautiful place where it will fit, just before the US tournaments on hard.

The mess caused by the early decision of Roland Garros organizers needs to be solved. And the Olympics decision, as hard as it is for all die-hard sports fans, gives us the required time-space. And that is good news at all.

Look at the ATP and WTA tournament schedule for 2020 as they look now.

Stay safe.
