The tournament originally known as U.S. National Championship was played for the first time in 1881 on grass courts in Newport, Rhode Islands

Since 1978, US Open is played at USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Queens, New York.

US Open was played on the clay three times from 1975 until 1977.

Originally US Open was played on grass courts (1881 – 1974), then switched for three seasons to clay and since 1978 it is played on hard courts at Flushing Meadows.

Emma Raducanu, a British rising tennis star, won the US Open ladies’ singles in 2021 as the qualifier. That means, she won 10 matches altogether (three in qualification and seven in the main draw).

Bjorn Borg played in the US Open singles finals four times but lost all of them:

Roger Federer has six consecutive finals (2004 – 2009, with record 5 Wins – 1 Loss), and Jimmy Connors played five consecutive finals (1974 – 1978, with record 3 wins – 2 Losses).

Swedish players won US Open three times, Mats Wilander in 1988 and Stefan Edberg in 1991 and 1992.

Argentina celebrated two times (1977 Guillermo Villas, 2009 Juan Martin Del Potro), and Austria one time (2020 Dominic Thiem).

#8. Who won more US Open ladies singles titles?

Serena Williams won US Open six times (1999, 2002, 2008, 2012, 2013, 2014).

Steffi Graf won US Open five times (1988, 1989, 1993, 1995, 1996) and Martina Navratilova four times (1983, 1984, 1986, 1987).

#9. How many titles from US Open ladies singles were won by Czech players?

Hana Mandlikova is the only Czech player who won the US Open singles. In 1985, she defeated Martina Navratilova 7:6 1:6 7:6. She played finals also in 1980 and 1982, both lost both matches with Chris Evert.

Martina Navratilova, who was born in the Czech Republic, was stripped of her Czech citizenship in 1975, so all her four US Open titles were won under the US flag.

Karolina Pliskova in 2016, and Helena Sukova in 1986 and 1993 played US Open finals too both lost their matches.

Jimmy Connors won the US Open five times (1974, 1976, 1978, 1982, 1983).

John McEnroe won four US Open tournaments (1979, 1980, 1981, 1984) and Andre Agassi just two (1994, 1999).
