Western & Southern Open Short Preview – Tennis Column #50

The big tournament is finally here (no offense to Palermo, Prague, or Lexington). Western & Southern Open starts with main draw singles matches tomorrow in New York.

I usually put together a quick preview before the big tournaments with the prediction of winners or attractive outright odds.

This time it would be a bit different. Long break put a shadow on everything. We did not see some players in action for five months. Picking the winners is almost impossible. I would not place a bet on the winners of men and ladies singles this time, but I offer a few notes to outright odds.

ATP CINCY in NY Outright Winners

Djokovic at 2.0 looks too low for me. I do not doubt he is the main favorite, but with so much unknown betting at 2.0 does not make sense for me.

Thiem at 6.50, Medvedev at 8.00, Tstitsipas at 9.00 are much better odds. I like Thiem chances, and I would not hesitate to bet on him at 8.00. 6.50 is slightly below what I consider as a value.

WTA CINCY in NY Outright Winners

Serena Williams is the odds-on favorite at 6.00. I saw how she played Lexington last week, and I do not believe she is in a form to win now (think she cares more about the US Open following week).

I like odds on Pliskova (11.00), Kenin (12.00), and Kvitova (13.00). Kvitova and Pliskova are at the same half of the draw, and I like Kvitova stability a bit more. Kenin is in the other half of draw so that I would consider bets on Petra Kvitova and Sophie Kenin.

Bet responsibly; the break was so long. And enjoy tennis.
