Grass Tennis Season is here – Tennis Column #24

The grass is less used court surface but on the contrary, the most famous tennis tournament is played on the grass. Wimbledon is the highlight of every tennis season and there is no change this season. Preparation for Wimbledon starts immediately after the finish of the French Open.

We prepared a small overview of what we can expect this grass tennis season.

There will be 6 ATP and 5 WTA grass tournaments played before the Wimbledon. There will be one more grass ATP tournament (Newport, USA) played after Wimbledon. However, the absolutely first tournament in the season on grass will start tomorrow in Surbiton, Great Britain. Surbiton will host ATP Challenger tournament.

The grass is a specific surface and a lot of players have a problem to get used to it. Balls are bouncing low on the grass, the service has a great impact as balls tend to slide on the grass. The grass surface deteriorates over the time of tournament and finals are usually played more on the dirt than on the green grass.

There was no player with more than one tournament win on grass last season. Djokovic and Kerber are defending the Wimbledon titles. We picked Djokovic and Kvitova to win Wimbledon this season in our bold tennis predictions. However, there are really a number of possible winners. We can start with Roger Federer and Nadal or Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka. Cilic, Alexander Zverev, John Isner or Karolina Pliskova, Simone Halep and Kiki Bertens can also be considered as strong contenders. Betting on grass tournaments is pretty hard as there is not a strong data set because of a low number of grass tournaments played. Check below the ATP and WTA schedule of grass tennis tournaments with names of defending winners.
