Wimbledon 2022 Pre-Tournament Winners Predictions

The third grand slam of the year, the famous Wimbledon will be played in a different atmosphere. No Russian and Belarusian player is allowed, which means we will not see Medvedev, Rublev, and Sabalenka. ATP and WTA decided not to award points for the tournament but players will still be playing for eternal fame (and money). We will not see Roger Federer or Naomi Osaka but Serena Williams is coming. And that is just a strawberry on the top. Let us dip into the entry list and pick the winners of Wimbledon 2022.

First, check the winners of grass tournaments this season. There were just six of them on the ATP Tour and seven on the WTA Tour, but the winner’s names show some pattern that can be really helpful.

My Wimbledon 2022 winner picks

Before the season I made my usual bold tennis predictions. The Wimbledon winners’ predictions were Djokovic and Sabalenka. The latter one will not play so that was rather an unfortunate prediction.

What are my thoughts now?

Wimbledon 2022 Men Singles Winner Pick

Predicting the winner of Wimbledon is not easy. There were just six ATP tournaments played on grass (I do not count challengers) and two favorites did not play any of them. Therefore, we can just guess how will they look on the grass.

Yes, I am speaking about Nadal and Djokovic.

Rafa Nadal is the master of clay and with two grand slam wins in the pocket this season he can try to reach the season grand slam. And that would be a great thing. We all remember Novak Djokovic’s unsuccessful attempt last year and how it shook the tennis world.

Road from the 1st to 20th Grand Slam title

I do not doubt Nadal’s qualities but with his leg problems, I doubt his ability to win Wimbledon. On the contrary, I am ready to bet against him from the early rounds.

Novak Djokovic is a different story. I think that Wimbledon is his best chance to win any Grand Slam this year. If he survives the first week, nobody will stop him. He still has the mentality of the champion and now it is time to prove it.

Who is his main rival this season? Matteo Berrettini is the first name that comes to my mind.

He was in the Wimbledon final last year (he lost with Djokovic 7:6 4:6 4:6 3:6), and has two titles on grass this season (Stuttgart and London). There was no better player this season on the grass yet. Though, the question remains: Can he beat Djokovic in the best of five matches on grass? I am not sure, as the pressure of Wimbledon grand court is hard to handle. It is not easy to win your first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon.

The other players I will follow closely are Nick Kyrgios, Andy Murray, and Marin Cilic. Murray and Cilic are proven players who can make a deep run at Wimbledon, but can they handle the physical toll of a long two-week tournament? Kyrgios is a different kind. When focused on the play he is a beast. But what are the chances he stays focused in seven matches in a row?

That said I will stay with my pre-season pick. Novak Djokovic has a great chance to win another Grand Slam trophy and with a decimated field of opponents (no Medvedev, Nadal with an injured leg) he can do it.

My Prediction of Wimbledon 2022 Men’s Singles Winner: Novak Djokovic

Wimbledon 2022 Ladies Singles Winner Pick

Ladies’ singles are about one question: Will it be Swiatek or someone else?

Iga Swiatek is way ahead of other ladies now. She did not play on grass this season prior to Wimbledon, and last year she finished Round of 16. But do not forget, she won girls’ singles at Wimbledon in 2018. Moreover, she is clearly playing the best tennis of her career this season. Her tennis is really something different from all other players.

Who can challenge her? The list is long and as always it is not easy to predict who can be a dark horse at ladies’ tennis?

Here is my list with quick reasoning:

Ons Jabeur – she beat Swiatek 5:7 6:1 6:1 in the round of 16 at Wimbledon 2021 and she reached/won the Berlin tournament just a week before Wimbledon.

Maria Sakkari, and Karolina Pliskova  – they both play tennis that can be successful on grass plus both of them are waiting for a big success. It can be now!

Beatriz Haddad Maia – just look how she handled the last two tournaments on grass. Two matches per day? No problem.

Simon Halep – remember 2019!

Petra Kvitova – two titles from Wimbledon and she can still run.

Serena Williams – she is back and I would never underestimate Serena in Wimbledon.

In the end, I would go with Iga Swiatek. Her tennis is just something extraordinary. But I do like also the odds of Simone Halep being in the final.
