I did exactly that for years. And I left a lot of performance on the table because of it.

Before we get into spin, it’s worth clearing up some widespread misconceptions floating around at club level, because they lead players to make the wrong call pretty consistently.

When you string a racket, you’re creating a trampoline effect. The ball contacts the strings, deforms them, and the string bed springs back, propelling the ball forward. Tension controls how much that trampoline can flex.

Here’s the principle everything else builds on: lower tension creates a more elastic string bed; higher tension creates a stiffer one.

A looser string bed deforms more on contact. It stays in contact with the ball a fraction of a second longer — that extra dwell time means more energy transfer, more string movement, and more snap as the strings return to position. A tighter string bed deforms less, contacts the ball more briefly, and feels more like hitting against a board: controlled, precise, but less dynamic.

What trips players up is the intuitive assumption that more tension equals more power, like a tighter rubber band snapping with greater force. In tennis, it’s the reverse. Lower tension produces more power because the string bed stores and returns more energy. Higher tension gives you more control — not more power.

That said, control and power aren’t the whole story. Spin is its own dimension, and it responds to tension in a way worth understanding on its own terms.

How lower tension generates more spin

If you’re trying to hit heavy topspin — and at the recreational level, most of us are, because topspin makes the game so much more manageable — tension is either working for you or against you depending on where you set it.

Here’s what happens when you rip a topspin forehand. The ball contacts the strings at an angle. The main strings (the vertical ones) deflect sideways at contact, load up under the force of the swing, and then snap back to their original position. That snapback is what imparts extra rotation on the ball. More snapback equals more spin.

At lower tensions, the strings move more freely and snap back harder. At higher tensions, they’re held tighter and don’t move as freely — the snapback is less dramatic, and you get less spin.

This is why coaches and stringers tell topspin players to drop their tension. There’s a mechanical reason for it, not just a matter of feel or preference. Strings under less tension deflect more at contact and return with more energy when they spring back.

Open string patterns (16×18, 16×19) amplify this because the strings are already spaced more widely. Lower tension on an open-pattern racket is a powerful combination for spin. Dense patterns (18×20) give you more strings in contact but less free movement — at high tension, they can seriously limit your spin potential.

If you tend to hit long — balls sailing past the baseline — you might benefit from a higher tension. The stiffer string bed shortens dwell time, reduces the trampoline effect, and keeps your shots in the court more naturally.

If you consistently hit short, lack pace, and struggle to drive the ball through the court, lower tension can add pop without you swinging any harder.

But it’s not simple. At very high tensions, strings become inconsistent — they transmit more vibration, shrink your sweet spot, and start working against you. At very low tensions, the string bed gets too lively, the ball feels unpredictable off the strings, and you lose the crisp feedback that helps you place shots.

For most recreational players, the practical sweet spot is somewhere between 45 and 55 lbs, depending on string type, racket, and playing style.

Flat hitters who want precision tend to prefer the middle to upper end of their racket’s recommended range. Topspin baseliners who rely on net clearance and safety margins from heavy spin generally do better in the middle to lower end. Serve-and-volley players and net-oriented players often prefer higher tension for the touch it provides on short balls.

There’s also arm comfort, which doesn’t get nearly enough airtime in conversations about tension. High-tension strings transmit more shock with every contact. If you’re managing forearm tightness or early signs of elbow discomfort, dropping your tension a few pounds is one of the cheapest interventions available. Lower tension means more string flex at impact, more energy absorbed by the strings, and less shock traveling into your wrist and elbow. It won’t replace a physio, but it’s a real piece of the puzzle.

How string type, gauge, and racket pattern change everything

Tension doesn’t mean the same thing across different setups. The number you string at plays out very differently depending on what string you’re using, how thick it is, and what frame you’ve put it in.

String type is the biggest modifier. Polyester strings (like RPM Blast) are stiffer than multifilament or natural gut at the same tension. At 52 lbs, a poly will play noticeably stiffer and more controlled than a multifilament. For spin, poly strings work brilliantly at lower tensions. For arm-sensitive players using these strings, getting the tension right is crucial. A multifilament at 48 lbs will be comfortable but may feel unruly for a hard hitter. At 52–54 lbs, it might be the sweet spot of comfort and precision.

String gauge — the thickness — is something most casual players ignore. Thinner gauges (17g, 18g) play more elastically than thicker ones (15L, 16g). A 17g string at a given tension will feel softer, move more freely, produce more spin, and wear out faster than a 16g at the same tension. If you’re using 16g and want more spin and feel without buying anything new, switching to 17g or 18g at the same tension is roughly like dropping the tension a bit. The thinner string deflects more easily, snaps back harder, and bites the ball more effectively.

String pattern changes things a lot. An open pattern like 16×18 gives strings more room to move. At the same tension, an open pattern will produce more spin and feel more powerful than a dense 18×20. Players on dense patterns for control often need to compensate by dropping tension to get back some of the string movement the pattern takes away. Players on open patterns at moderate tensions tend to land in a comfortable, high-spin spot without pushing the boundaries in either direction.

Beginner and recreational players

If you play once or twice a week, aren’t generating a lot of pace, and want to enjoy yourself without your arm aching the next day, aim for the lower half of your racket’s recommended range.

For most rackets, that’s somewhere in the 45–52 lb range. You get power without muscling the ball, spin potential from snapback, and a comfortable, forgiving feel. If you’re using a multifilament or synthetic gut (which most beginners should be), this range will feel lively and cushioned.

Intermediate club players

If you’re playing three or four times a week, developing a topspin game, and working on consistency and spin production, the middle of your recommended range is usually a good baseline — and from there you experiment based on feel.

For topspin players on poly strings: 48–54 lbs is a common sweet spot. For control players or those using hybrid setups: 50–56 lbs might be more appropriate.

Pay attention to whether you’re going long. If you’re regularly hitting past the baseline, add two pounds. If your shots feel flat and lack pace, drop two. Advanced and competitive players

At this level you likely know your game well enough to have strong instincts about what feels right. The variables get more specific: the exact string, gauge, frame, and playing style combine into a very individual tension window.

Hard, flat hitters on dense patterns might sit at 54–58 lbs for precision. Control-oriented players and net players often land at 52–58 lbs for the crisp, consistent response at lower swing speeds.

The best approach at this level is to string at one tension, note your impressions carefully after two or three sessions, then try a few pounds higher or lower. The clarity you build about what you need is worth a few extra restrings.

One last thing: tension drops after stringing. Fresh polyester can lose 10–15% of its tension in the first 24 hours just from settling into the grommets, then keeps dropping with every session. A string bed six weeks past its prime isn’t giving you any of the tension characteristics you paid for. You’re playing on something fundamentally different from what you started with.

Dial in your tension

String tension is probably the most adjustable, most impactful, and most ignored performance variable any tennis player has access to. It doesn’t cost you a new racket. It doesn’t require a technique overhaul. It’s a number — but it’s a number that affects your spin, your power, your control, and the long-term health of your arm.

The core of it: lower tension means more power, more spin potential, and more comfort; higher tension means more control and more precision. From that foundation, you layer in your string type, gauge, racket pattern, and playing style to land somewhere that actually serves your game.

If you’re a topspin player who’s been stringing in the upper half of your recommended range because someone told you high tension means more control — try dropping four or five pounds at your next restring. Give it three or four sessions. Notice what happens to your ball rotation, your net clearance, and the feel off the strings. It might surprise you.

If you’re a control player who struggles to keep the ball in the court, experiment with the upper portion of your range before assuming you need a different string or racket.

Find a stringer who will actually talk to you about your game, not just punch numbers into a machine. Tell them how you play, what you’re trying to improve, what your arm feels like after sessions. A good stringer is someone you want a relationship with.

And once you’ve found a tension that works, build a restringing schedule that keeps you there. A fresh string bed at the right tension is one of the best-performing setups in tennis. Six months later at the same tension number, you’ve got a different animal entirely — and not a better one.
