Tennis Column is our regular (which sometimes appears irregularly) opinion post about ATP and WTA tennis. What interesting happened in past days, what we expect in future. Our opinion about important and unimportant tennis things.
Sam Querrey
Sam Querrey is definitely the king of Mexico ATP tennis this season. He won in Acapulco back in February and now he added the trophy from Los Cabos. Last year he won just one tournament in Delray Beach in February. This season looks much better with two wins already and he probably did not say his last word. He showed perfect tennis also in Wimbledon and the last three months of this season can bring another success for Sam.
Last week we gave thumbs up to John Isner, this week we see another American tennis player showing the best of him. This year US Open can be a definitely American thing.
Rogers Cup
Montreal tournament has bad luck as they face many withdrawals. Djokovic, Murray, Cilic to name just a few. However, this year is all about Roger Federer (and Rafael Nadal). Therefore there is no sorrow in Montreal and fans are looking forward to the tournament. Just look at the crowd at Roger Federer practice and you see there is no disappointment between people or organizers.
Looking at the draw everybody expects and wish for Federer – Nadal final. But I would not discount chances of Alexander Zverev or American Sam Querrey or John Isner. Even with the absence of many stars, we will see good tournament and superb tennis.
Wilson versus Babolat
A pretty interesting situation arises in men’s tennis this year. With 48 tournaments played already (Citi Open in Washington will finish later tonight), third of them were won with Wilson rackets and third with Babolat rackets.
Check the numbers, how many tournaments were won with Wilson and Babolat rackets
Last two years the men tennis was dominated by Head, but this season with Djokovic struggling with demotivation and injuries, Wilson and Babolat are necks to neck for number one position. Expect Federer Nadal clash next week in Montreal can be also perceived as Wilson Babolat clash for the lead. Federer with five wins and Nadal with four, made the substantial part of 16 Wilson and Babolat wins this year. Let’s wait seven days to find out which racket brand will celebrate.
