BABOLAT PURE DRIVE

Babolat refreshes its model line every two years. Pure Drive was next on order after successful Babolat Pure Aero last season upgrade.

Babolat followed this trend and introduced the FSI Power string pattern with diamond grommets. This technology is also used in New Pure Drive to maximize the power of off-centered shots. DUNLOP SX SERIES

Dunlop updated its popular CV series of tennis rackets. It basically takes all the good from recently introduced CX series and added unique spin technology to get Dunlop SX model.

DUNLOP SX SERIES SPECIFICATIONS

DESIGN

There is not too much to report in terms of the design of the Dunlop SX series. The Dunlop identity can be seen from a distance. It takes over the CV series design with a combination of plain black and green (almost yellow) color.

TECHNOLOGIES

Dunlop SX tennis rackets are all about the spin. It used two technologies from the CX series: PowerGrid StringTech for creating a larger sweet spot and Sonic Core for reducing frame vibrations. Besides, the SX series also use Spin Boost technology that allows more string movement in the grommets. That makes the hits more controlled with extra bite and spin. Together you get a racket that is more forgiving thanks to a larger sweet spot, more comfortable thanks to reduced vibrations. It was one of the summer exhibition tournaments when I saw this racket for the first time. I was wondering if Matteo Berrettini is switching to a new racket but a few days later Head officially confirmed that Head Extreme got its technology and design upgrade. HEAD GRAPHENE 360+ EXTREME SPECIFICATIONS

DESIGN

It was impossible to overlook Head Extreme in its original yellow design. The frame was screaming all around the courts. Now, the Head decided to soften the color screaming a lot. The sharp yellow was replaced with decent grey and the yellow is just the sign on the frame. Head Extreme is like teenager growing into an adult. It is not just about the visual attraction but about the racket itself.

TECHNOLOGIES

The main upgrade of spin-friendly Head Extreme is in an addition of Graphene 360+ technology to the frame. Graphene 360+ improves the flex and the feel of the racket. Head is adding this premium technology to all of its rackets step by step.

PRICING AND SUMMARY

The racket should be available on July 30th in USA and mid-August in Europe. The pricing should be in $200 range depending on exact specification. We will see how the Graphene 360+ technology impacts this ultimate spin model.

HEAD GRAVITY

Head introduced the new Gravity racket back in 2019, but we think it is the model predetermined for significant success in this season. The marketing headline says, “A new force is here” let us check if it is true or not.

DESIGN

Sky Blue or Matte Red colors dominate Head Gravity Frame. They are not so dazzling like Head Extreme yellow but offer a very decent look for decent players. I, personally, like this design very very much.

TECHNOLOGIES

Head Gravity uses Graphene 360+ frame technology that is the keystone of all new Head models. However, in Gravity, you get innovative spiral fibers that result in increased power. No surprise, the leading marketing headline for this racket is “A New Force.” The Head Gravity is all about power. Additionally, you will also get a larger sweet spot and deeper string grooves for better flexibility.

PRICING AND SUMMARY

Players who are used to Head rackets and like their brutal and uncompromised power will also be pleased by a new Head Gravity. It offers the thing I always look for in Head rackets. Power. The prices are at the usual level for new and innovative models. They are not cheap but also far from expensive.

HEAD PRESTIGE 360+

Just days before the start of the Australian Open 2020, Head also introduced the upgrade to its flagship model for experienced players. Head Prestige got new technology and even a new facelift.

HEAD PRESTIGE 360+ SPECIFICATIONS

DESIGN

Head Prestige 360+ is all about the red. I like the idea formerly pursued just by Wilson to have a clear color distinction of each model line. Head is doing the same, and now it is clear that yellow belongs to Instinct, black to Speed, blue to Gravity, and red is always the Prestige. It is simple and clear. Red as the color of aggressiveness is suitable for a heavy racket for experienced players. The new design identity used by the Head for Prestige but also for other models is very classy.

TECHNOLOGIES

The upgrade of Head Prestige lies in using the successful Graphene 360+ technology. Graphene 360+ is the combination of 360 techs for better energy transfer and spiral fibers for better flex and feel. The Head uses graphene (the material itself) in the shaft for more significant power.

The model line consists of just five different models, all of them at higher weights (except for Prestige S). The head sizes are in the range of 93 to 99 square inches that is not very usual. I would recommend the Head Prestige MP model (with 98 sq. inches head and weight of 320 grams) as a starter for anyone who would like to try this beast. The more advanced players and professionals can always move to Head Prestige Mid with a small 93 square inches head but the same weight of 320 grams.

PRICING AND SUMMARY

Head Prestige 360+ is definitely for experienced players who like power tennis with a lot of attacks. Big hitters (like Marin Cilic, the face of Prestige) will appreciate this upgraded model. Pricing is very reasonable and can not be an issue for players looking at this type of racket.

WILSON BLADE v7

The year 2019 was all about the new Wilson Clash tennis racket. We were stunned by that racket too, and it made it to our top three list immediately. However, Wilson continues to improve its racket offering every year. They decided to use all they learned with Clash also in other rackets and introduced Wilson Blade v7.

WILSON BLADE v7 SPECIFICATIONS

DESIGN

In terms of design, there is nothing new with Blade v7 comparing to the old Blade racket. The green top of the frame and big W still stays as the unambiguous identifier of the tennis racket, also used by Serena Williams (Wilson Blade SW104 v7 Autograph Countervail). It would not be smart to change it, so Wilson decided to keep it. No surprise.

TECHNOLOGIES

As we already wrote, Wilson engineers took the best out of Clash and refreshed other frames with those superior technologies too. Wilson Blade v7 got new FeelFlex technology (used by Wilson Clash) in the frame. The carbon mapping incorporated into the structure increases the flexibility and stability of Blade v7. Wilson Blade v7 gained better control and spin as its predecessor but kept the ultimate power and feel it has. Additionally, Blade v7 got a new Top Grip Taper for better top handgrip placement.

PRICING AND SUMMARY

Wilson Blade v7 had been introduced already in 2019, but we expect it will be the crucial model of Wilson for the 2020 season. All the good things from a unique Clash racket were added to the new Blade tennis racket. And the response from players is encouraging. If you already play with Blade, then the transition to the upgraded model that keeps the useful features will be very smooth and easy. The price is in the range you would expect from Wilson. Not cheap but not inadequately expensive. The only downside is a limited number of specifications. Just five specs compared to seven of the older Blade models seems low, but we believe everybody can still pick its favorite one.

WILSON ULTRA V3

February 17 was the day when Wilson revealed another news. Wilson Ultra got an upgrade called v3. Wilson Ultra v3 will be in shops very soon, and here are the details of this updated model.

WILSON ULTRA v3 SPECIFICATIONS

DESIGN

The original blue paint on the mid of the Wilson Ultra racket frame was moved to the top. The middle section of the frame now belongs to silver. That is the only visual change of Wilson Ultra V3.

TECHNOLOGIES

The focus of Wilson engineers was on enhancing the positives of the racket. Therefore you will get an extra dose of power. A New PowerProfile technology is the key to improving the stability of the frame and generating more power. The extra power comes very smoothly thanks to improvements in the string bed area (integrated pws) and sweet spot channel.

PRICING AND SUMMARY

Wilson Ultra v3 comes in eight different specifications (two of them are junior versions 25″ and 26″). The pricing is very reasonable as all models, except for Pro v3, are priced under $200. Wilson Ultra Pro v3 (former Tour specifications are named Pro in all Wilson rackets) comes at a higher price, but this model is aimed at professional and more advanced players. YONEX EZONE

Yonex started 2020 in a big style. An excellent old Yonex Ezone got a fresh new design and several improvements. Altogether you get the full range of nine different specifications (7 for adults and 2 for juniors).

Let us go through major changes and updates the Ezone got in its 2020 refresh.

NEW DESIGN

First of all, everybody will notice new colors. Blue as the characteristic color for Ezone rackets was joined with Green as second flag color. The other four colors (pink, orange, white/green, green/white) were added and make Yonex Ezone very design-attractive in terms of color.

IMPROVED TECHNOLOGIES

Yonex uses Isometric heads for its rackets for 30 years now. Isometric shaped rackets heads increase sweet spot by 7% compared to conventional round head shapes. A new Yonex Ezone adds another improvement in expanding four head corners and adds another 5% of string flex. Graphite (Hyper MG) used in frame increases power repulsion and ball speed. Micro Offset layout of grommets enhance the power and decrease vibrations. Additionally, three layers of material embedded in handle reduce the vibration further.

PRICING AND SUMMARY

Yonex Ezone was an excellent model for years, and we had just words of praise for it. The new refresh of the Yonex Ezone should provide better off-center shot support, increased ball speed, and better shock absorption. Additionally, Yonex prepared nine different specifications (2 junior 25 and 26 inches models included) to satisfy every possible player. Moreover, the price for this updated model is more than friendly (30% lower than the usual price of competitors’ new models), so we expect the new Yonex Ezone will be in high demand.

YONEX ASTREL

Yonex rackets are not just for professionals and advanced players. Their new series of rackets called Astrel is precisely what recreational player needs.

DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY

Yonex Astrel rackets have a decent design. Each specification has a different color on the handle for better identification. The head of the racket is in a black-white color combination. All Yonex rackets offer unique Isometric head for the larger sweet spot. Astrel rackets also have Tri-Shut System (a combination of carbon, gel, and thermoplastic) for better shock-absorbing and lowering vibration.

PRICING AND SUMMARY

Astrel is an excellent racket for senior and recreational players. For people who like to play with the racket of a reputable brand with all necessary features but are not able to adjust to all the fancy models with modern technologies. Yonex Astrel is very light (280, 265, 260 grams) and offers great control, power, and play comfort. Just three different specifications make the decision which one to pick easy.
