Wimbledon 2021 Pre-Tournament Winners Predictions – Tennis Column #66

The greatest tournament of all. The only Grand Slam that was not played last season is finally back. There are many unique things about two weeks at Wimbledon courts. It is maybe the last time we will see Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic together at one tournament. The grass season was just three weeks long this season and skipped overall last season. A lot of players did not try a match on grass for two years. That leaves us with many options and surprises in the next two weeks. But that does not mean we will skip our pre-tournament winner forecasts.

Wimbledon 2021 Men’s Singles draw:

I called French Open 2021 “Nadal versus the rest of the world.” Nadal lost in the semifinals, and Novak Djokovic celebrated his nineteen overall Grand Slam and second Roland Garros victory.

Djokovic also won the Australian Open 2021, and the possibility to reach season Grand Slam is just two tournaments away. And that would be a huge success as the last ATP player who did it was Rod Laver in 1969 (the last WTA player was Steffi Graff in 1988).

Wimbledon 2021 will be all about the Novak Djokovic. He or someone else will win it?

Let’s go through his opponents.

Rafael Nadal withdrew from the Wimbledon (and also Olympics) due to injuries.

Roger Federer is not the player he used to be. Age and injuries are taking their toll. Now, we should ask if Roger will stay in the tournament until the first weekend.

Stefanos Tsitsipas is not a grass player (his win/loss is 8:7 on grass), and I can not imagine the scenario when he is beating two of the guys above him in the ranking in Wimbledon.

Daniil Medvedev has probably the best chance from ATP Top 10 players to put pressure on Djokovic. On another hand, he is too shaky and nervous in crucial moments, and I can not see how he would stand the pressure if he faces Novak in the finals.

Dominic Thiem is just a shadow of the player he used to be last season and the season before.

Alexander Zverev and Matteo Berrettini have all the skills they need to be successful at grass courts. Though, we can apply the same measurement as on Medvedev. Would they stand the pressure on Sunday at the center court in Wimbledon in their first Wimbledon finals?

Do you see anyone other who has the skill set needed to make a deep run in London?

I like Marin Cilic and his play on the grass. He won the Stuttgart tournament and looked good in Queens too. The recovery from the sloppy start of the season went just great. He is the man I have as a “black horse” who can make a deep run in Wimbledon. But again, can he beat Djokovic? I do not think so.

That leaves me with Novak Djokovic. He already has five titles from Wimbledon, so he definitely knows how to play on the grass. He is the favorite, and his only opponent is in his head. And I think he can handle him too.

My winner pick: Djokovic Novak

Wimbledon 2020 winner: not played
Wimbledon 2019 winner: Djokovic (def. Federer 7:6 1:6 7:6 4:6 13:12)
Our pre-season Wimbledon 2021 Winner pick: Djokovic
Readers poll: (as of 06/23) – Djokovic 40%, Federer 34%, Nadal 17%  – for actual results, go here.

Wimbledon 2021 Ladies Singles draw:

There is no need to remind you that picking Ladies Singles winner at any tournament is just about pure luck.

I could name the entire WTA Top 100 to present the shortlist of favorites and possible contenders. Nothing is impossible in WTA tennis these days. Semifinalists of Roland Garros were Zidansek, Sakkari, Pavlyuchenkova, Krejcikova. Anyone had them on the winners’ picklist before the tournament? I doubt it.

Before the season I picked Kvitova. She won twice at Wimbledon (2011, 2014) and this might be her last chance to seriously compete on the grass. I still think she can make a deep run on her favorite surface.

But the same can be said about twenty other players.

That means I decided to take a totally different approach. I take the entry list of players (qualifiers excluded) and let the artificial intelligence pick the winner.

I hope that the omission of qualifiers will not be a crucial mistake and artificial intelligence basically means a random number generator tool.

To make it more fun, I let the computer pick eight quarterfinalists and then pick four of them as semifinalists and so on.

Here is the result.

Quarterfinalists: Halep Simone, Tauson Clara, Andreescu Bianca, Collins Danielle, Kvitova Petra, Mertens Elise, Zheng Saisai, Teichmann Jil
Semifinalists: Halep Simone, Tauson Clara, Andreescu Bianca, Collins Danielle
Finalists: Halep Simone, Tauson Clara
Winner: Tauson Clara

It looks as something surprising and exciting lies ahead of us in the next two weeks in London.

My winner pick: Tauson Clara

Wimbledon 2020 winner: not played
Wimbledon 2019 winner: Halep (def. Serena Williams 6:2 6:2)
Our pre-season Wimbledon 2021 Winner pick: Kvitova
Readers poll: (as of 06/23) – Osaka 29%, Serena Williams 18%, Halep 14% – for actual results, go here.
