How good were our Bold tennis predictions for 2018?

Bold Tennis Predictions for 2019

22nd November 2017 was the day when we published our bold tennis predictions 2018. Some of the predictions were called crazy at that time, some incompetent, and some were surprisingly praised by our readers. And as we were not afraid to publish predictions, we are also not afraid to say how good or wrong they were. Here is the list of the predictions compared with reality.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN 2018

TennisProGuru winners pick: DJOKOVIC – PLISKOVA Karolina
Readers opinion: FEDERER – WILLIAMS Serena

People were picking Serena Williams before she announced she will skip Australian Open 2018. But she still got most votes.

Men’s draw: Federer 44%, Nadal 19%, Djokovic 13%
Ladies draw: Williams Serena 22%, Halep 16%, Muguruza 15%, Wozniacki 12%, Someone else 9%
(as of 13.01.2018)

Result: FEDERER – WOZNIACKI

Our commentary:

I was wrong and the public was right (at least in men’s draw). My both picks lost before the semifinals. Pliskova in quarterfinals and Djokovic even one round sooner. Novak Djokovic was not absolutely healthy what takes him out of the real attack on title. Karolina Pliskova met Simona Halep in quarterfinals and Simona is not her favorite opponent. Karolina did not resist at all.

The public was correct in seeing Federer as the winner. Almost half of our readers gave him the vote and were absolutely right. He lost his first set in final and nobody except Marin Cilic was able to resist him. Women pick was influenced by Serena Williams withdrawal. But other choices were Halep, Muguruza, Wozniacki which means the people have finalist almost right.

FRENCH OPEN 2018

TennisProGuru winners pick: NADAL – KERBER
Readers opinion: NADAL – HALEP

Men’s draw: Nadal 65%, Someone else 8%, Thiem 8%
Ladies draw: Halep 31%, Williams Serena 23%, Muguruza 14%
(as of 24/05/2018)

Result: NADAL – HALEP

Our commentary:

Congratulations to our readers and participants in French Open Poll. They got it absolutely right. It is not rocket science to predict Men’s draw winner when we speak about clay and French Open. Nadal was something like “sure” bet. However, to pick Simone Halep as the winner was a different story. I am just sorry, that Kerber lost in quarterfinals with the future winner in three sets in a pretty nerve-wracking match. From then Simone Halep was just unbeatable and she absolutely deserved to win.

Once more congratulations to our readers!

WIMBLEDON 2018

TennisProGuru winners pick: DIMITROV – KVITOVA
Readers opinion: FEDERER – WILLIAMS SERENA

Men’s draw: Federer 52%, Nadal 18%, Someone else 7%
Ladies draw: Williams Serena 27%, Halep 19%, Kvitova 14%, Someone else 14%
(as of 23/06/2018)

Result: DJOKOVIC – KERBER

Our commentary:

Now we can congratulate Novak Djokovic and Angelique Kerber. Almost nobody between our readers and definitely not me was predicting such result. I saw Djokovic return in big style this season, but I expected it happen at US Open. I also expected Kerber to win some Grand Slam this year, but I predict her French Open triumph. I was wrong. Kerber made it one grand slam later and Djokovic one grand slam sooner. That happens, but I am happy for both of them. Finally, we have the race for best tennis player wider and duopoly Nadal-Federer finished.

US OPEN 2018

TennisProGuru winners pick: DJOKOVIC –  SHARAPOVA
Readers opinion: FEDERER – WILLIAMS SERENA

Men’s draw: Federer 36%, Nadal 29%, Djokovic 24%
Ladies draw: Williams Serena 45%, Halep 10%, Pliskova 10%, Wozniacki 10%, Someone Else 10%
(as of 08/22/2018)

Result: DJOKOVIC – OSAKA

Our commentary:

Finally, I got something right. Novak Djokovic proved that he is back with two consecutive Grand Slam titles (Wimbledon and US Open) and I am glad I held on with my pick (check here). (I was right also with my pick for French Open 2018, but Nadal was sure bet almost for everyone.) I was able to pick better than our readers, but they were pretty close as they had Djokovic on third place.

Ladies Singles were another story. Naomi Osaka with her calm performance surprised everybody (including herself). Readers were really close with Serena Williams losing her mind in finals and I was pretty far from the perfect pick.

NUMBER ONE POSITION

TennisProGuru picks for number one position:
NADAL to FEDERER to DJOKOVIC

HALEP to PLISKOVA to MUGURUZA to PLISKOVA

Result:
NADAL to FEDERER to NADAL to Djokovic
HALEP to WOZNIACKI to HALEP

Our commentary:

Pliskova disappointed us at Australian Open, however quality of tennis played from quarterfinal at Ladies draw was outstanding. Wozniacki deserved her first Slam win and return to no. 1 position.

Federer is great, he plays great tennis and with Nadal injury, it was just a question of time for Roger to become the oldest number one in history. Monday 19th February it is the reality. We were right at least with it. And then on 5th November, Djokovic took number one spot from Nadal. Great Season 🙂
